Issues In The Catchment Area (Afforestation + Agriculture)

Planting mangroves along the river banks can be a good initiative in increasing vegetation as well as purifying water it protect the shores at times of flood also . The mangrove plantation increases the biodiversity of the river and purifies the water to a great extent as seen near sea shores. Mangroves are an asylum for breeding fish and roosting place for various bird species. By planting mangroves along the river sides will definitely protect the river from encroachment. If the mangroves are thick in the sides of the river the river can be cleaned for mud and sand to increase the water flow, which will definitely clean the river. We can help nature clean the ganga continuously by this. I am attaching the story of a person who fought for mangroves which could protect people from natural calamities. We need to neutralise the effect of urbanisation anyhow. It is not possible to stop urbanisation or industrialisation but we must compensate for the loss in every possible way. So mangrove plantation along the banks of rivers will protect the river as well as all related living organisms including the people .

Reduction and treatment of liquid waste flowing in to the river

Vetiver grass of South Indian origin(deep rooted & non fertile) is now being used throughout the world as a very economic bio-engineering tool for slope protection by civil engineers. It can protect river bank erosion & prevent silting. Besides, it is a grass which can be used for cleaning air, water & soil pollution, along with excellent Carbon sequestration. It contributes in improving agricultural yield & poverty alleviation. Its characteristics include: (a)C-sequestration rate of a staggering 15 Tons/hectare/year from atmosphere. Its roots going up to 4 meters (for non invasive south Indian variety) stabilizes slopes & river banks. It absorbs & contains almost all harmful heavy metals including Hg (> 6mg/Kg), Arsenic (> 100-250mg/Kg ), Pb(>1500mg/Kg) in its roots and survives high acidity, alkalinity & salinity. (b)It improves soil fertility, pest control, bio-diversity & recharges aquifer. It prevents flash floods, top soil erosion, absorbs harmful farm chemicals & purify water bodies. Oil extracted from its roots(other variety) is used in medicine & fragrance. It can be used to make handicrafts. It is a cash crop. With its possibility of planting anywhere & everywhere including inter tree & as hydroponics, it is an answer in present scenario of decreasing plantation land

Water Conservation (Efficient Use of Fresh Water)

Water should be stored locally. In every village their should be a huge pond, it should be in a size through out the year it should provide water for agriculture. Yes we have reservoir but transporting it into 100's of kilometres is a issue, the best way to avoid this is water should be stored locally. In many cities the lack of ground Water is big issue because there is no land to sink water in to ground all land filled up with buildings, so in every colony their should be government land to sink water in to ground. In Japan we can see a underground Tank which expand to kilometres. I am not saying to build this type of Tanks ,it costs. But let allow the water to sink in to ground which is a natural Tank. Storage of water Locally is cheap and best way for water needs of people everywhere. We have rain's but lack storage.

People Participation And Contribution

Active participation of students from various schools and colleges of the cities situated on the banks of river ganga is required. Associations like youth hostels association can be taken for creating awareness. Schedule for every school and college should be made at least for one hour any day of the week for spreading awareness and making some initiatives. Our country is full of talented engineers who can be very helpful in designing the banks into great tourist spots. separate, clean & neat arrangements have to be made for performing rituals along river ganga. along with tourism dept and other engineering construction companies positive initiative can be taken to develop river banks of haridwar, kanpur, alahbad & patna. this project should be complete in 2 years if parallel initiatives are taken in all the above mentioned cities.
